Thou causest the sun to shine by day, and the moon to give her light by night. Thou causest grass to grow for cattle, and herb for the service of man. Thou sendest forth thy spirit, and renew- est the face of the earth. Thou givest rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, and scatterest abroad the dew of thy blessing. Thou art about our bed and our path, and thou alone makest us to dwell in safety. Thy government is the government ofperfect goodness and unerring wisdom. By means which we are unable to comprehend, thou bringest good out of evil, and light out of darkness. May we, therefore, receive with thankful and contented minds the appointments of thy providence, and endeavour, as far as we are able, to resolve our wills into thine. And as to thee, O Father, we are indebted for all the blessings and comforts of this life, so may we devoutly thank thee that to these thy undeserved mercies thou hast added others of unspeakable value and everlasting duration. In compassion to our ignorance and in mercy to our infirmities, thou didst send thy Son Jesus Christ into the world to open before us the gates of heaven and immortality, and to raise our minds from the contemplation of this frail and perishable state of things, to that bright and eternal world, where peace and virtue and happiness dwell together for ever.
