Madonna Pia: A Tragedy, In Three Acts (1860) is a play written by Theodore Martin. The story is based on the historical figure, Pia de' Tolomei, a noblewoman from Siena, Italy. The play is set in the 14th century and follows the tragic story of Pia, who is married to a cruel and jealous husband, Nello della Pietra. Pia falls in love with his cousin, Ghino di Tacco, and they plan to run away together. However, Nello discovers their plan and forces Pia to reveal Ghino's whereabouts. Ghino is captured and Pia is imprisoned in a tower. She is eventually poisoned by Nello and dies in agony. The play explores themes of love, betrayal, jealousy, and the oppression of women in medieval society.
