The Clemency of Titus is a historical tragedy written by Pietro Metastasio in 1734. The play is set in ancient Rome and revolves around the character of Titus, the Roman Emperor. The plot of the play centers around the conflict between Titus and the Jewish people, who are seeking revenge for the destruction of their temple. The play opens with Titus returning to Rome after a successful military campaign. He is greeted by his people with great enthusiasm, but his joy is short-lived as he soon learns of the Jewish plot against him. The Jewish people are led by Berenice, a former lover of Titus, and her brother, Herod. They seek revenge for the destruction of their temple and the persecution of their people by the Romans. Despite the anger and resentment of his people, Titus decides to show clemency towards the Jews. He pardons Berenice and Herod and promises to rebuild their temple. However, his decision is met with opposition from his advisers, who fear that it will weaken his authority and undermine the power of Rome. The play reaches its climax when Titus is forced to choose between his love for Berenice and his duty as Emperor. He ultimately chooses his duty, and the play ends with the Jewish people being spared, but Berenice being forced to leave Rome. The Clemency of Titus is a powerful and thought-provoking play that explores themes of love, duty, and political power. It is a testament to Metastasio's skill as a playwright and his ability to capture the complex emotions and motivations of his characters. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
