The Pentamerone, also known as The Story of Stories, is a collection of fairy tales written by the Italian author Giambattista Basile and first published in 1634. The book contains fifty tales, many of which are variations on well-known stories such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. However, Basile's versions are often darker and more violent than their modern counterparts. The tales are framed by the story of a prince who seeks a bride and is told the stories by a fairy. The Pentamerone has been praised for its imaginative storytelling and influence on later fairy tale writers such as the Brothers Grimm. The 1848 edition, translated into English, is a popular version for children and includes illustrations. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
