Historical Atlas of McIntosh County, Georgia: A Survey Through Maps & A Personal Commentary

FROM THE AUTHOR- Maps define geographical context in any historical work. They are a necessary adjunct to a proper understanding-and analysis-of the people, places and events associated with the intent of the historian. In forty years of researching and writing about the history of coastal Georgia, the study of maps, and their related cousins such as land plats and surveys, have played an integral part in formulating my research conclusions. My interest in local and regional geography and topography through the study of state and county maps, and coastal navigation charts, evolved from an early age, attendant to my fascination with local maritime history and my adolescent explorations of local waterways and islands. This book represents the consolidation in a single volume of the maps, charts, surveys and land plats contained in my previous works of local and regional history. With most of the maps herein, I have included personal notes of my own experiences with a given location as well as necessary historical context. This is essentially a work of reference, but it is also intended to be a book for browsing and making one’s own personal connections with any given place in McIntosh County.
