THERE'S AN ANIMAL IN ALL OF US...
BRID: Fight or Flight is a gripping new sci-fi novel set in the post-apocalyptic London. A fast-paced, action-packed, sharp-witted futuristic adventure that's born of science but delivered through relatable teen characters.
If you liked the half-god, half-human characters in the Percy Jackson books (but without the mythology) or loved the Harry Potter 'Sorting Hat' (but from a savage animal DNA perspective) or were captivated by people's individual daemons in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials (but more genetically engineered) or enjoyed the terrifying bug-like menace of Starship Troopers (but on a future Earth) then this may well capture your imagination.
The year is 2417. A series of catastrophic genetic experiments has shifted the species' power balance on the planet. Earth is ruled, not by man...but by giant Insects. The Sectz. Vastly superior physically, they have obliterated man's traditional weapons of war. Established infrastructures have broken down. Now it is humanity's turn to hide away in isolated city-colonies. Heavily fortified skyscrapers stand like giant termite mounds.
As ever, though, mankind adapts. Military scientists combine the most formidable DNA from across the Animal Kingdom with the human genome. A fearsome new army of Hybrid Soldiers is created. The Bridz. The human spirit becomes the Hybrid spirit.
Yet, before Bridz become Hybrid Soldiers, they remain as normal children. Only during the hormonal change from childhood to adulthood do their instinctive mammalian powers begin to surface. Only then are they transferred to the regional Hybrid Military Training Academies to hone their savage potential. To form new regiments and mark a new spike of resistance against the Sectz.
Against this apocalyptic backdrop, events unfold through the eyes of a young schoolboy, Xavier Wish. For this pre-Hybrid youngster, growing up with his two best friends in the chaotic environment of the London City Colony is just normal everyday life. What Xavier doesn't realise is, he's about to discover his powers - and his purpose - in a global war to save the human species. The hybrid wars have begun...
Written for YA readers but appealing to all ages, BRID: Fight or Flight is a relentless, often humorous sci-fi action adventure set in an unthinkable dystopian future London, raising questions about humanity, war, ecology and a terrifying global species imbalance.
