The history of homes and the way in which they are run reflects changing social and economic conditions as surely, and more fascinatingly, than historical documents. First published in 1968, English Homes and Housekeeping traces the revolutionary changes in this sphere over a period of two centuries. The author has drawn on in-numerable sources-from cookery books, popular songs and diaries to excerpts from Punch Almanack the cries of 18th century street vendors and Board of Trade statements on rationing.

The book closes with two sections: Quarrying the Facts and Assembling the Materials which suggests how students can carry out their own pieces of enquiry and project work.
