Dee, a poor, young immigrant girl from Serbia (formerly Yugoslavia), travels to England alone to begin a new life. With little education and unable to speak the language, she begins her journey as a hotel chambermaid. Innocent and positive by nature, Dee trusts people who take advantage of her. The man she falls in love with and marries is not what he seems, so she becomes trapped in an unhappy, destructive marriage. Believing in the redemptive power of resilience, Dee perseveres.
