The story of a young girl, Claire, growing up during World War II and her friendship with a boy of German descent, Carl, who lived across the street from her. One night Carl and his family disappeared, accused of being Nazi sympathizers and sent to a detention camp. The story is of Claire’s and Carl’s experiences, and their efforts to find each other after the war.
