Om Prakash Sharma, MD, FRCP, DTM&H, Master FCCP, FACP Om Prakash Sharma was born in India. After obtaining an MD degree, he read tropical medicine at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London. He served internships in Scotland, and England and a residency at Albert Einstein Medical College, Bronx, New York, where he completed the fellowship in cardiopulmonary medicine. As a Prophit Research Scholar of the Royal College of Physicians, London, he conducted immunological research in sarcoidosis at the Royal Northern Hospital Sarcoidosis Clinic, London. He was a Professor of Medicine in Residence at Kyoto University Medical School, Kyoto, Japan. Dr Sharma was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, UK and a Master Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He was President-Emeritus of the World Association of Sarcoidosis and other Granulomatous Disorders and Editor of Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine. Dr Sharma has authored or edited six books; eight monographs, two clinical atlases, and written more than 500 articles, short papers, editorials and reviews on the topics of sarcoidosis; tropical medicine; hypersensitivity pneumonitis; interstitial lung disease and other pulmonary disorders. He has written two medical biographies; one of Dame Sheila Sherlock, world renowned liver disease specialist, and the other of Professor David Geraint James, his mentor and teacher who founded the World Association of Sarcoidosis and other Granulomatous Disorders. Until his death in 2012, Dr Sharma was Professor of Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.
