Character Building in Youth: The Poetry Workshop is the results of an idea Dorothy R Swygert conceived through her desire to transform the system. Through these counseling poetry sessions, her conditional seniors were able to fulfill diploma requirements and realized the goal of high school graduation in a New York City high school. These students proclaimed with enthusiasm, I Am Somebody. Dr. Swygert is a native of Fairfield, Alabama and a graduate of Tuskegee University. As she taught and counseled students in New York City she said, Through my many years of teaching, I have never found a child who could not learn. They may have different learning styles, but all can learn. Believe in Yourself, one of her most popular poems, is dedicated to children around the globe.
