Detective Chief Inspector Tom Stone returns to work after being shot during an investigation. If, however, he had been hoping for a low-key and stress-free return, he will soon be disappointed. The murder of a prominent Jewish man has all the hallmarks of being racially motivated but as DCI Stone investigates further and comes across a series of coincidences, he begins to have his doubts. His enquiries eventually lead him back to a time over seventy years in the past, when the world was only just beginning to understand the full horrors of the Holocaust. Gradually, he begins to wonder whether he is really uncovering the truth or only pursuing a personal obsession with Auschwitz. Overlaying all of this is, probably, the most important decision of his professional life. During a previous investigation he had discovered that one of the Met’s top police officers, together with a current government minister, had conspired to cover up a murder. Deciding what to do with this information will affect both his professional and his personal life and, more importantly, ultimately challenge everything he stands for.
