This book describes in detail the University of Calgary’s holdings of the papers of one of Canada’s most famous modern writers. Hugh MacLennan’s novels, such as Barometer Rising, Two Solitudes, The Watch that Ends the Night, and Voices in Time, and his prose, such as The Rivers of Canada, are formative contributions to the development in this century of a mature Canadian cultural identity. MacLennan and his works are favourite and indispensable subjects of contemporary scholarship. It is essential that the manuscripts, correspondence, and other personal and professional papers which could illuminate the man, his work, and his career be made available to readers, writers, scholars, and the many others for whom they could be a valuable resource. The Hugh MacLennan Papers, First Accession, provides the first significant step in that process, aided by the prefatory biocritical essay of Elspeth Cameron, noted biographer of MacLennan, Irving Layton, and Earle Birney.
