The Otago Central Railway: A Tribute

That Tony Hurst’s tribute book should have sold so many copies throughout New Zealand is in itself a testimony to the special place in their hearts that so many people have for this great rural railway line, until 1990 the longest country branch of the NZR, which wound its way through some of the most spectacular scenery to be found in Otago, indeed the country. This new printing of the third edition, which was completely revised with all-new photos in 1995, tells the story of this line with details on the idiosyncrasies of its construction, its trajectory and the men and machines which operated it. Although most of the railway is now history, the first 64 km through the awesome Taieri Gorge to Middlemarch remains and the trackbed as far as Clyde is now the popular Otago Central Rail Trail walkway and cycleway.
