Alcatraz Island Light: The West Coast’s First Lighthouse

This lighthouse overlooks the San Francisco Bay. It stands on a rocky island called Alcatraz. The island once was used as a military fort and later became the site for a maximum security prison. Some of society’s worst criminals were kept in it. Today the prison is closed, but Alcatraz Island Light still shines.
