As a young student in Paris, Robert O'Connell was first enamoured of the artistic imagery of Augustine’s works. The imagery continued to impress him as his scholarship progressed, and now, after years of research and study on the subject, he offers a treatment of Augustine’s image clusters which should be of interest to readers of philosophy, theology or language. Basing the book on Augustine’s dramatic use of language and metaphor, the author aims to shed light on some of Augustine’s thought which has puzzled the scholarly world.
