In the first full-length presentation of Stendhal’s economic perspective, Alfred H. Bornemann argues that Stendhal was a pioneering economist and activist who has been overlooked by both economic historians and literary critics alike. This book includes a biographical account which focuses on Stendhal’s informal economic education in the early 1800s, at the time when interest in Adam Smith and classical political economy was just emerging in France. In addition, it is an analysis and critique of Stendhal’s political treatises and the relationship between his economic perceptions and his novels.
