Rosamond Lehmann: A Thirties Writer

Rosamond Lehmann, the British novelist, was born (1901) into the privileged upper-middle class life of Edwardian England but came of age during the disillusioned years between the two world wars. Intellectual, discerning, and poetic, she was very much part of the Oxbridge-trained generation of Auden, Isherwood, and Spender. But her distinct point of view offered a feminine counterpart to their perceptions and made hers one of the outstanding female fictional voices of the time. This study reintroduces Rosamond Lehmann to American readers, exploring her life, her novels, and the social and psychological insights she found in her search for enduring values during a time of ferment.
