This exegesis of selected narrative works by the Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann (1926-1973) departs from the idea that there exists a symbiosis between the text and the society from which it comes. Bachmann suggests that certain historical processes have produced, reinforced and perpetuated values, attitudes and modes of thinking which are indigenous to her native land. Exploring the historical, social and cultural evolution of Austria, this study offers illuminating insights regarding the paradoxical nature of the Austrian mind as reflected in Bachmann’s oeuvre.
