The End of the GDR and the Problems of Integration 11/12: Selected Papers from the Sixteenth and Seventeenth New Hampshire Symposia on the German Democratic Republic

The GDR’s disappearance as a separate state has prompted discussion of what, if anything, might remain as its substance. It is clear that East and West Germans are experiencing unification completely differently. Whereas West Germans see it primarily as an economic burden, East Germans understand it as a process, which, as public opinion surveys confirm, bring long-term hope but short-term disorientation. The myriad issues surrounding German unification are examined in the 14 papers presented in this volume.
