After serving as a parish pastor, he attended Princeton Theological Seminary and earned his Th.M. degree. After fifteen years as founding pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, he attended the University of Glasglow, Scotland, and fulfilled the requirements for the Ph.D. degree. He served on the faculty of Columbia Theological Seminary and was named I. McDowell Richards Professor of Biblical Exposition. Columbia Seminary honored him with its Distinguished Service Award in 1996.
