The Transformation of Rural China

The author of this work has repeatedly interviewed farmers and rural officials from various parts of China in order to keep in close touch with changes that have been sweeping the country-side from the Mao era through the Deng era to the present day Jiang era. The book explores the extraordinary changes of the past forty years from the multiple perspectives of political, social, and economic transformation, showing how each impacts upon the other. The overarching theme is that the Maoist credo penetrated the villages and had a profound influence on village life and mores and attitudes, to a considerably greater degree than is commonly believed today.
