Somme: 141 Days, 141 Lives

Alexandra Churchill

Commemorative day-by-day look at 141 ordinary soldiers who gave their lives at the Somme. The Battle of the Somme was not only the costliest battle of the First World War, but one of the bloodiest in human history, with over a million lives lost. Each of those lives was special. In this day-by-day commemorative journal, 141 of those soldiers have been chosen, and the stories behind them described, one for each day of the battle. The poignancy of their personal tragedies will remind us of the great sacrifices made by ordinary men for our future freedom. Alexandra Churchill is an author, researcher and historian who has contributed to and appeared on numerous television documentaries, including Timewatch (BBC2), Fighting the Red Baron (Channel 4) and Titanic with Len Goodman (BBC1). Her second book, ‘Over Land and Sea: Chelsea FC in the Great War’ (July 2015), was her first collaboration with Andrew Holmes.
