Things have changed recently in the Evening Dispatch newsroom: Patricia is in London working on a famous woman’s magazine, but pining for her fiance, the contemptuous Hugh Malling. She finally decides that he’s more important than her career and she returns to Edinburgh, desperate to marry him. In the newsroom Rosa no longer has a soul mate in Patricia and new female journalist Hilda with her ill-fitting tweed jacket and prosaic writing style is not worthy of Rosa’s friendship. When Charles Rutland arrives, Rosa has a new competitor for the Dispatch’s most ambitious recruit, and when Charles manages to find scoops all over the city in the most mundane of situations, she’s not the only one to suspcious of his talents. However, when Patricia has a fatal accident, Charles and Rosa team up their investigative skills to piece together the final moments of Patricia’s life and to discover how much of an accident it really was.
