Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson used to tell a story about how Jews interact with the Law of the Talmud that goes something like this: There were three rabbis arguing about the meaning of a point in the Torah–two for one interpretation, and one for the other. G-d overheard the argument, appeared to the three rabbis and said: Actually, the one man here has the correct interpretation. At which point all three sighed and said, Well, now it’s tied. Let’s go find Rabbi Osterman to get a fifth vote. # D. A. Osterman is not the Rabbi Osterman that the Rebbe referred to. However he has written a thoroughly researched discussion about Mashiach.
