The Ice Blue Bones of Telluride

Twelve-year old Sylvan Bald didn't want to go on a hike with his parents on Thanksgiving Day. He would much rather have stayed home to read his new book or play with his toy bricks. Fortunately for him and for the rest of us, he reluctantly agreed to go. Once on the trail, he was happy to be outside on this gorgeous fall day in the San Juan Mountains in Southwest Colorado. Being an avid rock hound, he ran up and down the trail looking all around at stones - pocketing those that struck his fancy and picking up walking sticks along the way. Since a young child, Sylvan had gotten the nickname "Finder of Many Treasures" for he was always spotting interesting or unusual items wherever he went - be it a parking lot in a big city or a remote forest trail. On this fine day, it proved to be the same. Out of the corner of his eye, Sylvan saw some blue stones embedded in a bigger rock right off the trail. However, they looked different. To him, they looked like bones that he had seen in a museum. Whose were they? How did they get here? Why were they blue?
