Few are as well placed to tell the story of the Republic of South Sudan and her people’s experiences as Stephen Mathiang. The primary purpose of this book is to show how the ‘Silent Hand’ shaped and guided the author’s destiny against his will. But besides documenting his life so far, it also gives an overview of the Jeng culture, their history and the protracted struggle for his people’s emancipation which started in August 1955 and culminated in the declaration of South Sudan as an independent nation on 9 July 2011.

In addition, he sheds some light on the rough path that the people of the newly born Republic of South Sudan should expect as they pursue development. He also sets forth seven wars that he believes the South Sudanese leaders should help their people to fight to enable them to benefit from their freedom while at the same time avoiding painful pitfalls. Also briefly featured in this book are life histories of luminaries, including retired Bishop Nathaniel Garang Anyieth and Paul Kon Ajith.

For those wishing to have an in-depth understanding of South Sudan, this is a valuable reference material.

Stephen Mathiang, Ph.D. joined his people’s struggle for independence in 1983. He is an ordained minister in the Episcopal Church of Sudan, Diocese of Bor and founder of Church and Development (C&D) and The Mission Gardens of Christ, both working in South Sudan. He is an inspiring preacher, conference speaker and renowned teacher.
