This short monograph is a sequel to the book: 13th Corps, A Short History - 1stBattalion North Staffordshire Rifle Volunteers (1858 - 1908) self-published as a Kindle Book in early 2022 by this author. The current focus is on a second family - the Clives (the other earlier family being the Williamsons from the period of the foundation of the Corps) that played dominant leadership roles in the 13th Corps, especially from the period 1867 - 1908, but with continuing military and civic engagement through to 1963.

The mere mention of the "Clive family" immediately provokes investigating possible linkages to the well-known "Clives of Shropshire", particularly linking to the Parliamentary representative (MP) for the County of Shropshire (Salop) Richard Clive (1693 - 1771) and his wife Rebecca Gaskill (1694 - 1732), whose most famous (perhaps today, controversial) offspring was Robert (1725 - 1774), best known as "Clive of India", later to become a Major General, a Lord, and First Baron of Plassey (Wales). For our purposes it will suffice to refer to this branch of the Clive family as the "Clives of Shropshire" since there exists some mysterious intrigue about another part of the family that will be referred to as the "Clives of Staffordshire". Hence the "Legend oif the Clives".
