Scarification: the process of etching a design into the skin, controlling the scarring so that it bends to the will of the designer. A process that stretches beyond notions of beauty or appeal - it’s about forming an identity so deep from the engraving, that it reaches from your soul into the very biology of your being.

Throughout the years captured within this book, scarification is the process that has come to be my framework of not just surviving, but thriving. Life scars us all in different ways - from scars upon our skin, to scars so deep within our souls that we only see them in a slouched gait, a disinterested demeanour, a laugh just a little bit too loud and too frequent.

The thing about scarring though, is that the healing is entirely up to you. Whether it’s others or yourself that is doing the etching, the healing is solely your birth right.
