I Am Caliphilus

Though cannon may take my head or its shards pierce my body to halves…yet, I cannot die. I am protected. I am cursed. I am unnaturally immortal until the end of time. Caliphilus, Pilate’s gatekeeper, the sadistic individual who reveled in scourging The Christ, was cursed by Jesus to live until His return at our time’s own end. Many have wondered what such a man might have done with his now two-thousand-plus years of weary existence. Perhaps an angel was appointed to keep him alive to face the endless days, essentially making him immortal till Christ’s return. What incredible insights, knowledge, and historical secrets might he alone be aware of? And more importantly, why has he now come forward to relate what he has learned? Born in 6 A.D. beyond Ephesus of Lydia, one might wonder why I come forth only now to relate truths lost and secrets perhaps best left banished to their reclusive historical niches.
I would tell you of these things: of miracles, mysteries, and men; of horrors, hate, and hope - and of all that accompanied my personal quest for the supposedly risen Christ…the very One Who had cursed me with this damnable immortality!
