The Themes in British Social History series covers the most important aspects of modern social history in broad ranging surveys. Each volume is based on primary research but gives a general treatment of the topic with which it is concerned. This work on disorder and popular protest, originally covering 1700-1870, is being revised and enlarged into two individually more focused volumes. This first self-contained volume has been completely updated and reset. It covers early industrial England up to the 1832 Reform Act. Broad in coverage, the book covers 18th century riots and their role in the reactions to social and economic change. The second volume - covers an extended period 1832-1939. This book examines rural and provincial outbursts as well as urban disturbances and takes account of the new research that has appeared in the field since 1979. It is aimed at undergraduates and those taking courses in British 18th and 19th century social, economic and political history. It is supplementary reading for sociology students.
