Zero: worlds beyond carbon is a book that explores the social, philosophical, and political context of Aotearoa, New Zealand’s environmental policy. This country, that has a global reputation for progressive social and ecological policies, has so far failed to slow green house gas emissions. Despite its relative isolation New Zealand is an active player in the global agricultural trade. Assumptions about economics and politics perpetuate neoliberal ideologies that maintains a fossil fuelled future and discourages transformational change. The belief that carbon markets and carbon pricing can prevent the Anthropocene is common throughout the World. There are philosophical and ideological constraints that are exposed in the belief that these prevent new and preferably better worlds to evolve. Context is everything if we are going to act local and think global. It is now urgent that we imagine worlds beyond carbon. This is how to think about radical change in order to save the planet and ourselves?
