Training is an important aspect of all analytical sciences and this book aims to provide a text that can help in training UV spectroscopy. The chapters are contributed by experts from a range of backgrounds in academia and industry. The book is intended as an introductory text. It starts at the very fundamentals of the interaction of light and matter and progresses through the laws of light absorption, instrumentation and standards to the newer chemometric techniques. Other chapters cover colour, structural aspects of UV spectrosocopy, detection in high performance liquid chromatography and fluorescence. A set of practical experiments are included. These experiments may be used in industry or a teaching environment to help illustrate the important aspects of the text. There is an extensive introduction to the newer chemometric techniques for multicomponent analysis and these techniques are illustrated in the practical experiments. UV spectrosocpy is an established method, but recent applications of mathematical techniques has expanded its role. These newer chemometric techniques are covered together with the fundamental principles of UV spectroscopy. The role of mathematical techniques and developments in computers is expected to give new life to UV spectroscopy. Many industries, especially the pharmaceutical industry, are required to demonstrate that staff have received adequate training in the techniques they use. Most of the training is carried out in house and the book should provide a useful text to supplement the training exercises. The experiments included in the book can also be used as part of a training course. The book also discusses standards and validation which are topics of increasing concern in industry.
