The sphere in question is the earth itself, and Ammons’s wonderfully stocked mind roams globally, ruminating on subjects that range from galaxies to gas stations. It is a remarkable achievement, comparable in importance to Wallace Stevens’s Notes Toward a Supreme Fiction.
