Robert Bruce was Scotland’s greatest king ever. The Bruce, as he was known, was crowned King of Scots in 1306, a time when the ancient kingdom of Scotland was under English occupation. When King Robert began his reign, his first two battles were losses. Yet from 1307-1313, The Bruce won battle after battle. He shunned pitched medieval clashes and fought as a guerrilla force, a form of warfare which he may have invented. The war peaked in 1314 when King Robert faced an immense English invasion. With brilliant tactics and resolute bravery the vastly outnumbered Scots defeated and routed the English knights, archers, and yeomen at the battle of Bannockburn. Over the years, three generations of King Edwards went down to utter defeat.
