The UK struggled to come to terms with the world that emerged from World War II, with the loss of empire and the rise of a new continental movement for European unity of which the UK wanted no part. But as its post-war strategy failed, and the new Europe prospered, Britain felt compelled to join the European Community, not because it wanted to, but because there was no alternative.
