This text is the South African version of the book on management by the American authors Hellriegel, Jackson and Slocum, and is designed to place the fundamental principles of management firmly within a South African context. Many students who are exposed to the book and are required to study it as part of their formal university or technikon studies, are inexperienced and new to the world of organizations, business and management. Very often their understanding of management principles and theory is hampered by the American context in which those principles are discussed and explained. This applies particularly, for example, to the discussion of the environment in which business operates. American legislation, American trends and American demographics, for example, have little relevance for South African students. It is sincerely hoped that the discussion, explanation and presentation of management principles, theory and practice within a South African context will both facilitate learning, as well as add to the enjoyment of the subject.
