The role of the Forestry Commission is to ensure the sustainable management of Britain’s forests and woodlands in order to promote the diverse benefits that forests provide to meet the needs of present and future generations. This publication sets out the Commission’s annual report and accounts for Great Britain and for England for the year 2007-08, covering its activities in England in programs to promote: rural development; economic regeneration of former industrial land and disadvantaged communities; public access to woods and forests and the development of diverse recreational opportunities; conservation and improvement of the biodiversity, landscape and cultural heritage of forests and woodlands. Functions which are funded on a GB-wide basis, such as plant health, international policy and research, are also covered. Separate reports are made to the Scottish Parliament and National Assembly for Wales to cover activities in Scotland and Wales.
