Since the release of Like Drawing Blood, many out there have been charmed by Gotye’s adeptness at fusing lyrical scenes with atmospheric arrangements. So it’s not a surprise that an eclectic assortment of musos have jumped at the opportunity to participate in the organic reworking process that is Mixed Blood. ‘Heart’s A Mess’ is the most popular canvas, with excellent remixes by Joe Hardy and DLake. Karnivool amps up ‘The Only Way’ with crunchier guitar and drum riffs, leading us to imagine Wally in leather and eyeliner á la Reznor. Inga Liljestrom strips ‘Coming Back’ with bare instrumentation, heightening the sense of desolate longing. Faux Pas treats us to a cheeky manipulation of voice proving that remix records should be unlimited in its approach to aural aesthetics and ‘goofy fun’. All in all, a pleasurable deviation and proof that Gotye is welcome listening for the future of Australian electronica.
