Great Barrier Grief

Oh Mercy

Oh Mercy are proud to announce the release of their new album, ‘Great Barrier Grief’. But the album name has more to it than a play on words. Oh Mercy are heavily influenced by the classic Australian sound & lifestyle in crafting this gorgeous album full of timeless, acoustic pop tracks and the title has been in the back of Alexander’s mind since before releasing their debut album, Privileged Woes. ‘Great Barrier Grief’ is certainly not an eco warrior title, but instead a reference to a point in time, a challenge to overcome, or a complex situation. ‘Great Barrier Grief’, for example, is meeting an incredibly beautiful person, but having a mental or physical barrier between you.

Review

I recently got to see Oh Mercy play live. What struck me is how effortless they sound: they harmonise beautifully and their guitar sound is reminiscent of the best in sixties and eighties pop à la The Byrds or The Go-Betweens. Great Barrier Grief, their sophomore release, comes on the heels of last year’s well-crafted EP, Keith Street, and their critically-acclaimed 2009 debut, Privileged Woes. The new record finds the band maturing. New single Stay Please Stay takes you on a blissful journey that resembles the way you may feel relaxing on a (rare) beautiful Melbourne evening.
