Acclaimed Melbourne-based Balinese gamelan orchestra, Gamelan DanAnda, in collaboration with electro- jazz-fusion group Firetail, highlights the beauty of cultural exchange through their new album Anglayang.
Released under the new label Komunitas Records on vinyl, this project explores the blending of traditional Balinese gamelan music with contemporary jazz fusion. With their sound described by The Age as “a new and thoroughly beguiling-musical language”, the album is set to provide listeners with a sound they’ve never heard before.
Tracks 1 - 3 were recorded and engineered by Myles Mumford at Sing Sing East at Box Hill Institute on 8 November 2024.
Tracks 4 - 7 were captured live by Myles Mumford at the Primrose Potter Salon at the Melbourne Recital Centre on 15 November 2024. Live sound by Simon Foster.
The album was composed, arranged, recorded, mixed and mastered on Wurundjeri land. Field recording on Side A captured at Carmyllie Forest and Farm, Grenville on Wadawurrung land. We pay our respects to Traditional Owners of land throughout Australia, and acknowledge that this always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
Gamelan DanAnda acknowledges the traditions that we represent in Australia, their lineages in and outside Indonesia, and our many teachers.
This album is dedicated to Zulya Kamalova, who supported the creation of this collaboration in her role as Director of The Boite. Zulya passed away in September 2024 and is sorely missed.
This record was produced with the support of a Music Works grant from Creative Victoria, an Artist Assembly Grant from the Melbourne Recital Centre, and with the support of The Boite.
