Smilers

Mann Aimee

“I’ve always been fascinated with eccentric personalities,” says Los Angeles singer songwriter Aimee Mann. On Smilers, her seventh solo CD, Mann presents thirteen exquisitely-crafted new songs about the inner life of people living far from the bright lights of success or fame.

Review

This is another outstanding album from Aimee Mann that sticks to the style and sound that has served her well throughout her solo career. She isn’t experimental, but Mann’s songwriting has always had a multi-layered depth that demands repeat listening. This will never receive commercial airplay; it doesn’t have the two-minute hook required … besides, two minutes would never do justice to this work. A bit like offering a chapter instead of the whole book: this needs to be devoured as a whole.

Smilers isn’t a happy record – the characters and subjects definitely have a depressive edge – but these have been written with a sensitivity that shines through via beautiful melodies and Mann’s lulling voice. Some are calling this Mann’s best work to date and while I would hesitate at that statement, her body of work is of such a high standard, it doesn’t really matter. Smilers is evocative, rewarding listening.
