Mozart’s genius has been dissected, discussed and performed by amateur and professional musicians for decades, such is his appeal and accessibility. His ability to write for ‘the people’ and ‘the professional’ is showcased on this disc of piano sonatas performed by Mikhail Pletnev. The sonata was considered almost exclusively a form for ‘home entertainment’. K330, 331 and 332 suggest elements of instruction and lightness, whereas K457 extends the sonata to a deeper, more technical and emotional sphere suited to the consummate pianist. Pletnev’s first recording of these works is at home with both aspects of the sonata form and matches Mozart’s talents with his own extraordinary prowess and interpretation. Let’s hope Pletnev doesn’t stop here.
