Winners of the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards 2017

Congratulations to all the winners of the 2017 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards!

The winner of the Fiction Award is Georgia Blain for her final novel Between a Wolf and a Dog. Blain died in December of last year and her award was accepted by her partner, Andrew Taylor.

The winner of the Non-fiction Award is Madeline Gleeson for Offshore, an uncompromising overview of what actually happens in Australia’s offshore detention centres.

The winner of the Poetry Award is Maxine Beneba Clarke for her collection, Carrying the World. This is the first book of poetry to be ever published by Hachette.

The winner of the Writing for Young Adults Award and the winner of the People’s Choice award is Randa Abdel-Fattah for When Michael Met Mina. Our reviewer describes this YA novel as ‘a classic Romeo and Juliet love story set against a contemporary backdrop of the current refugee crisis’.

The winner of the Drama Award and the winner of the overall Victorian Prize for Literature (Australia’s single richest literary prize) is Leah Purcell for The Drover’s Wife. This play is a radical reworking of the classic Henry Lawson short story.
