What we're reading

Each week we bring you a sample of the books we’re reading, the films we’re watching, the television shows we’re hooked on or the music we’re loving.

Amy is reading Conversations With Creative Women: Volume Two by Tess McCabe

I’m reading my way through Conversations With Creative Women: Volume Two, a gorgeous and inspiring locally published book that’s just come into Readings this week. Compiled and edited by Tess McCabe of the Creative Women’s Circle, the book contains interviews with fourteen incredible women working locally and internationally on all kinds of creative business pursuits. My favourite stories so far include Georgia Hobart’s journey to find the perfect shoe that saw her create the super successful and perfectly comfy and stylish footwear brand Hobes, the story of Shelley Simpson’s long- and ever-growing internationally loved ceramics empire Mud, and the love of drawing and painting expressed in Dawn Tan’s artwork as she tireless paints, makes, designs, and teaches.

This book is exquisitely designed and I’m loving reading it as an object as much as for the inspiration and compelling conversations with some of the most talented and creative-business savvy women (and I can’t say that I’m not also using it as an aspirational wish-list to furnish my home, kitchen, and feet!).

Bronte is watching Enough Said by Nicole Holofcener

A romantic comedy about two divorced parents (Eva played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Albert played by the late James Gandolfini) with a child about to leave for college, Enough Said was such a wonderful surprise. I’d been meaning to watch it for a while heaving heard it described as the best kind of intelligent romantic comedy (it most definitely is), as well as much praise for Gandolfini’s powerful performance is in light of his death (also true) but I wasn’t prepared for how much the story itself would move me. The vulnerability portrayed by the lead’s feels so raw and genuine, while - even though I knew it was coming - the goodbye scene with Eva’s daughter was wrenching. One of the best films I’ve seen this year.

Emily is shopping for Mother’s Day (this Sunday 11 May)

I will be buying Betty Churcher’s Australian Notebooks for my mum given she has always admired her career in the Australian art world. She also adored her previous book Notebooks.

I’m also going to buy her local Melbourne writer, Emily Bitto’s debut fiction The Strays given it’s inspired by the legacy of the renowned Heide group of artists and writers of the 1930’s.

For myself, I’ve heavily hinted at my partner that if he is actually going to buy something for Mother’s Day on behalf of my two little ones then he needs to buy me The Bridge: Season 2. Oh, and I now need to read the Stella prize winner which was announced last week so The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka is also on my list!
