What we're reading

Each week we bring you a sample of the books we’re reading, the films we’re watching, the television shows we’re hooked on or the music we’re loving.

Nina is reading Look At Me by Jennifer Egan

I read A Visit from the Goon Squad back when it was first released, and I was deeply impressed by Egan’s writing.

I wanted to read Look At Me after reading an interview with Egan where she spoke about how hard it was for her to write, and why it was such an important book for her; “some of the most exciting moments I’ve had as a writer were during the writing of that book…One day I read the first six chapters of the book in one sitting, and I tore out of the house and went running, and I had this sense that I’d never read anything quite like that before, that I’d done something really different.

I’m halfway through, and really enjoying it. It’s the story of a model who has a terrible car accident that leaves her face completely changed afterwards. It’s a fascinating premise and the character of Charlotte is brilliant.

Chris is watching Treme: Season 4

Sadly, we finished watching Treme over the weekend, the fourth and final season of a classy portray of New Orleans doing it hard after Hurricane Katrina. The characters (my friends) have now slipped into never-never land - but if you have not yet watched this series and are a lover of fine drama and the most excellent music in the world, then settle in for some top viewing.

Treme, takes its name from a neighbourhood of New Orleans. and follows musicians, lawyers, police, chefs, Mardi Gras Indians (including one of my favourite characters), who are all attempting to rebuild their lives, their homes and their distinctive culture after the worst natural disaster to hit America.

Bronte is reading An Elegant Young Man by Luke Carman

About a month back I read Luke Carmen’s literary debut, An Elegant Young Man, and I’m still recommending it to people. I read through some of it again this week and was once again left in awe at Luke’s wholly original voice and his instantly familiar portrayal of contemporary racial tensions in Australia. If you want to find out more, there’s a great review of this title from The Australian (which can be read here) or there’s a book trailer featuring Luke reading fragments of the book (which you can watch here).
