What we’re reading: Sylvia Plath, Adam Gidwitz and a crop of YA thrillers

Each week we bring you a sample of the books we’re reading, the films and TV shows we’re watching, and the music we’re listening to.

Paul Goodman is reading The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

It’s unnerving reading The Bell Jar. Not just because of its content: the trajectory of protagonist Esther Greenwood’s depression is marked by remarkable prose and a dry wit that makes this hard-to-read book really, really readable. And actually very funny. It’s a classic for a reason, partly due to these qualities, but also due Sylvia Plath’s ability to capture the essence of struggling with depression, and the objective loneliness of that struggle. I can’t believe I didn’t get around to this sooner.

Bec Kavanagh is relishing in YA thrillers

I’ve been revisiting my nineties scream queen days with binge-worthy YA thrillers by Karen M. McManus (One of Us Is Lying and Two Can Keep a Secret) and Kara Thomas (The Cheerleaders). McManus is particularly adept in the form, weaving a tight narrative with plenty of suspense and satisfying endings.

I’ve also been eyeing off the beautiful glut of graphic novels that have come in to the children’s bookshop recently, and am particularly looking forward to Hamish Steele’s DeadEndia, which has gorgeous illustrations, a cracking story, and a diverse cast of characters.

Kathy Kozlowski is reading The Inquisitor’s Tale by Adam Gidwitz, illus by Hatem Aly

This book was a Newbery Honor Book in 2017, so I’m a bit late, but I loved this story told by a group of travellers sitting round in an inn. Set in Medieval France it tells of the adventures of three children – a peasant girl, a Jewish boy, and a young monk oblate of African heritage – and their miraculous dog. Some hold the dog to be holy, others to be part of wicked superstition, and so they are in grave danger as they journey through Saint Denis and on to Mont Saint-Michel to see the king’s mother. A rich and gripping read for stronger readers who enjoy historical fiction.
