Upcoming changes to Readings at the State Library Victoria

The State Library Victoria has announced plans for an $88.1 million redevelopment of the iconic Melbourne institution, commencing in July 2017 and due for completion by 2020. We are delighted that the plans will involve our State Library bookshop moving to a new, larger space within the building.

Managing director Mark Rubbo says: ‘We are very excited to be part of this wonderful project that will transform the iconic institution.’

The new designs, created by internationally acclaimed firms Architectus and Denmark’s Schmidt Hammer Lassen, will enhance the State Library Victoria’s facilities, and open up 40% more space to the public.

Minister for Creative Industries, Martin Foley, says ‘The State Library Vision 2020 project has been created with generations of new library users in mind. Across the board it will provide access to the knowledge and learning opportunities they will need to participate in the economy of the future, while at the same time celebrating the extraordinary heritage of this site.’

The relocation of the State Library bookshop will see our shop space increase by around 60%, allowing for more shelving and other exciting possibilities. The Russell Street entrance to the building will be reopened, for the first time in 15 years, and will serve as the entrance to our shop, along with a cafe and collaborative work space.
