The shortlists for the 2019 CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals have been announced.
The Carnegie Medal is awarded by children’s librarians for an outstanding book written in English for children and young people. The Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded by children’s librarians for an outstanding book in terms of illustration for children and young people.
Here are the shortlisted books for the 2019 Carnegie Medal:
- The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo
- Rebound by Kwame Alexander
- The House with Chicken Legs by Sophie Anderson
- Bone Talk by Candy Gourlay
- A Skinful of Shadows by Frances Hardinge
- Things A Bright Girl Can Do by Sally Nicholls
- Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds and illustrated by Chris Priestley
- The Land of Neverendings by Kate Saunders
Here are the shortlisted books for the 2019 Kate Greenaway Medal:
- The Day War Came by Nicola Davies and illustrated by Rebecca Cobb
- Ocean Meets Sky written and illustrated by Eric Fan and Terry Fan
- Beyond the Fence written and illustrated by Maria Gulemetova
- The Wolf, the Duck and the Mouse by Mac Barnett and illustrated by Jon Klassen
- Julian is a Mermaid written and illustrated by Jessica Love
- You’re Safe With Me by Chitra Soundar and illustrated by Poonam Mistry
- The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane and illustrated by Jackie Morris
- Suffragette: The Battle for Equality written and illustrated by David Roberts
Alison Brumwell, Chair of the judging panels for both awards, said: ‘This year’s outstanding shortlists clearly demonstrate the vision, vitality and depth of children’s publishing, including the emergence of small, independent publishers. Superb debuts take pride of place alongside established, well-known names, representing the very best in writing and illustration for children and young people. Challenging themes of bereavement, isolation, friendship and identity are treated with humanity and insight and in a range of distinctive written and illustrative styles.’
