The Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Medals winners 2018

The winners of the 2018 CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals have been announced!

The Carnegie Medal is awarded by children’s librarians for an outstanding book written in English for children and young people. The Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded by children’s librarians for an outstanding book in terms of illustration for children and young people.

As of last year, all shortlisted titles are also considered for an extra commendation – the Amnesty CILIP Honour, which celebrates books that best illuminate, uphold or celebrate human rights.

The CILIP Carnegie Medal has been awarded to Geraldine McCaughrean for Where the World Ends.

In the summer of 1727, a group of men and nine boys are put ashore on a remote seastac (rock column) in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides to harvest birds for food. No one returns to collect them, and the boys are left with growing fears and speculation about the end of the world.

Inspired by real life events, Where the World Ends is a tense and evocative survival story.

The CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal has been awarded to Sydney Smith for his illustrations in Joanne Schwartz’s Town is by the Sea.

A coal mining town in the 1950s is brought to life vividly in Town is by the Sea, which contrasts a child’s life of play above ground with that of the subterranean adult world of work.

Smith visited a miner’s museum in Cape Breton’s Glace Bay, where the story is set, and took inspiration for his expressive brush work from Impressionist artists such as J.M.W. Turner.

The Amnesty CILIP Honour for the Carnegie Medal shortlist has been awarded to Angie Thomas for The Hate U Give

Sixteen-year-old Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend, Khalil, by a police officer. As the reverberations of the crime spread throughout their community, Starr must contend with her own grief and trauma, as well as the the expectations of those around her.

Angie Thomas’s much-lauded debut novel is heartbreaking, political and ultimately hopeful.

The Amnesty CILIP Honour for the Kate Greenaway Medal shortlist has been awarded to Levi Pinfold for his illustrations in A.F Harrold’s The Song from Somewhere Else.

One of Pinfold’s first commissions to illustrate a novel, The Song from Somewhere Else explores friendship, betrayal, acceptance and doing what’s right.

Pinfold’s black and white illustrations perfectly capture the eerie atmosphere and rich imagination of Harrald’s story.
